SPETSES

Spétes is one of the island of the Saronic Gulf, along with Hidra, Poros, Egina and Salamina. It is an elegant island with a refined personality, thus the destination of the Greeks of a good society. There are no cars on the island, only motor-scooters, but you can also move in horse-drawn carriages for romantic tour.

It has a perimeter of about 25 kilometers and you can visit by scooter approximately in an hour along roads shaded by pine forests and the Mediterranean scrub. The road allows you to admire from above the beautiful beaches, all located in sheltered, quiet and small bays, spread over the island.

The Neo-Classical Greek or Venetian style, painted in white or delicate pastel colors, have roofs of tiles and gardens in which colorful bougainvillea and varieties of Mediterranean flowers are very well kept. The Dapia streets and squares that overlook the harbor, are paved by a characteristic paving of Spétses, made of white and black polished stones.

From here you can walk to the Old Port, with its wooden sailing boats and the many clubs that come alive after sunset. The sea is crystal clear and very clean everywhere. Most of the beaches are equipped with beach loungers and umbrella and they offer water sports and typical taverns. Others are quieter, for a total relaxation, or wild and free, both with small pebbles or sand.

Spétses has many churches to visit and two small museums. One is in the ancient house of Bouboulina, the Greek heroine of the war against the Turkish, born on the island. In her honor, and to remember the decisive battle that was fought in those waters, the first weekend of September hosts the “Armata” festival, which attracts tourists from all over Greece and beyond.
